LAURENCE THRUSH
Director / Writer

Laurence Thrush is a British director currently living in Los Angeles. In 2000 Laurence produced and directed his first documentary film, FIDEL’S FIGHT, based on cockfighting in Cuba. The film was selected and screened at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the Doubletake Documentary Film Festival and won BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY at the New York Independent Film Festival in 2001.

In 2002 Laurence directed a series of charity commercials for THE PRO CHOICE EDUCATION PROJECT, based on the subject of illegal abortion in Mexico. The exposure of these public service announcements lead Laurence to write, produce and direct campaigns for THE NATIONAL COALITION TO ABOLISH THE DEATH PENALTY, PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (an anti-gun violence organization), DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH and CURES NOW (a stem cell advocacy group). 

In 2003, Laurence was short-listed for the Best Young Director Award at the Clio Advertising Awards and the Cannes Film Festival. A cinema advert he directed for a London based tailor, TIMOTHY EVEREST, was selected as the first prizewinner in the “Best New Director/Broadcast” category of the 2004 London International Advertising Awards. In this same year, he directed an advertising campaign for ESPN in conjunction with MILLER, that was sited in Creativity as one of the top broadcast campaigns of 2004 and was recognized internationally, including at the Clios, the New York Art Director’s Festival and won a Bronze in Cannes.

“TOBIRA NO MUKO” is Laurence’s first film as writer/director.

GARY YOUNG
Cinematographer

Upon gaining a distinction in Film and Television Production at Bournemouth College of Art and Design, Gary went straight into music videos and drama. His experience also covers commercials and the 2000 documentary Fidel’s Fight, which won the Best Cinematography at the New York Independent Film Festival.
Laurence and Gary have a long history of collaborating together on music video and commercial projects. Essentially a two-man crew, Laurence and Gary worked closely together at every stage of the production of TOBIRA NO MUKO, from concept to completion.

SAIKI, TAKAO
Executive Producer

Saiki, Takao is a Japanese producer currently living in Tokyo. He lived and worked as a TV commercial line producer in Los Angeles for 13 years.
In 1978, he began to co-produce TV commercial in U.S.A. under the name of Locations Unlimited. He established his own production service company, SIZE, both in Los Angeles and Tokyo in 1980. He began to co-produce TV commercials for Shiseido, Sony, Honda, Toyota, Panasonic and other major corporations for the Japanese market. He then branched out his production offices in New York and Sydney, Australia.

He produced a free paper, TRANS NEWS FORM in 1983, and also produced an interview video, VIDEO VOICE in 1985 for the Japanese advertising industry. VIDEO VOICE has interviewed numerous artists, such as Andy Warhol, John Lurie, David Sanborn, Syd Mead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Robert Longo, Steven Okazaki, Wynton Marsalis, Survival Research Lab, Matthew Rolston, David Lachapelle, Zbigniew Rybczinski, to name a few.

He has produced music videos for the Japanese artists by collaborating with directors, Julien Temple for Dreams Come True “Winter Song”, and with Vincent Gallo for L’Arc~en~Ciel “Anemone”.

He has been producing numerous TV commercials for the Japanese market, for clients, such as Parco, Nestle, etc.
“Tobira No Muko”(Left Handed) is the first feature film he has produced.

Music

Mark Nelson, recording as PAN AMERICAN has released 4 albums on the KRANKY label and his latest, FOR WAITING, FOR CHASING, on MOSZ RECORDS. The soundtrack for TOBIRA NO MUKO consists of a single, nine-minute recording.
